Goshen, IN

The town of Goshen is situated in northern Indiana near the Michigan border. In 2010, the population was almost 32,000. Goshen is a manufacturing center for recreational vehicles and home of the Elkhart County 4-H, one of the biggest and best county fairs in America.

History

The city of Goshen was established in 1831. The area was originally home to the Miami and Algonquin Native American Tribes. Among the first settlers were Pennsylvania Dutch Amish. To this day, a large percentage of Amish live in the Goshen countryside where they farm the land and enjoy simple lives close to friends and family.

Nature Trails

Goshen is known for beautiful nature trails. The famous Pumpkin Vine Nature Trail goes from Goshen to Middlebury and is a popular place to run, walk and bike. Trail enthusiasts will also enjoy the Maple City Greenway and the Millrace Trail.

Downtown Historic District

In 1983, the Goshen Historic Downtown District was added to the National Register or Historic Places. This charming area is quickly becoming a local center for the arts. On the first Friday of every month, Historic Downtown rocks the night away with music, entertainment, dancing in the streets and special events.

Amish Home Cooking

If you like to eat, you’ll love Goshen’s Amish restaurants. Amish food is filling, hearty, made from scratch and rich. Meals are prepared with home-grown organic veggies and grains along with fresh meat, cheese and eggs from Amish farm livestock. You’ll be feasting on home-baked breads, hearty soups, homemade bakery and delicious desserts. The Amish sell their food at farmer’s markets and specialty stores as well as owning and operating restaurants. Favorite dishes include slow-roasted beef, fried chicken, pot pies and rich egg noodles. Amish restaurants cater to families, and the food arrives in serving bowls that are passed around the table.
